Just about every year, there are a handful of movies that earn Academy Award nominations that just about everyone would never consider to be classic “Oscar” movies.
This year, the prime example is Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa, a semi-improvised comedy in which Johnny Knoxville plays an elderly man doings a series of staged stunts caught on hidden cameras. Knoxville's hair and makeup had to look believable enough to fool regular people talking to him face-to-face — and the work proved so convincing that it won over the Hairstyling and Makeup branch of the Academy, whose members nominated the film for their category.
On the flip side, there are also a handful of movies every year that are surprisingly — even shockingly — denied any Oscar nominations, and this year, films like Lee Daniels' The Butler, Rush, and Fruitvale Station fit that particularly unfortunate bill.
So, can you guess which of the following films from the last 30 years have earned Oscar nominations, and which have not? Take our quiz to find out!
